Sweet Peas

Scientific Name: Lathyrus odoratus

Height: Sweet peas can grow to a height of 183-244cm (6-8 ft) under optimal conditions. It is essential to provide adequate support for the plants to climb as they grow.

Days to Maturity: Sweet peas typically take 70-95 days to reach maturity from the time of planting. It is important to be patient and allow the plants enough time to develop fully.

Sun Preference: Sweet peas prefer full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil rich in organic matter. They benefit from regular watering, especially during dry spells.

Plant Type: Sweet peas are classified as hardy annuals, which means they complete their life cycle within a year. They are relatively easy to grow and can tolerate cooler temperatures. Sweet pea seeds have a hard outer coat. Soaking the seeds overnight before planting or gently nicking the seed coat can improve germination rates.

Pinching: When sweet pea seedlings reach a height of 10-15cm (4-6 inches), it is recommended to pinch out the growing tips. This practice encourages bushier growth and more flower production

Appearance : Sweet peas are climbing annual plants with delicate, winged flowers. The blooms come in a variety of colours.

Harvesting : Harvest when there are at least 2 unopened flowers at the tip of the stem

Vase life : Vase life can be expected for 4-5 days; use flower food.

Special Features: In the language of flowers, sweet peas symbolize blissful pleasure, delicate pleasure, and departure. They are often given as a thank-you gift. Sweet peas are native to the Mediterranean region, specifically Sicily, Southern Italy, and the Aegean Islands. Sweet peas have been cultivated since the 17th century. They were first introduced to England in the 1690s by a Sicilian monk named Francisco Cupani.

Design features: I love to use sweet peas as either a structural base or as a finishing element, with the foliage. Their scent and colours add something super special to your spring arrangements.
