Sunflower

Scientific Name: Helianthus annuus

Height: Sunflowers can vary in height depending on the variety. Common sunflower varieties can grow anywhere from 2 to 10 feet tall.

Plant Type: Sunflowers are annual plants, meaning they complete their life cycle in one growing season. They belong to the genus Helianthus and are part of the Asteraceae family.

Plant Spacing: When planting sunflowers, it is recommended to space them about 1 to 3 feet apart, depending on the variety. This allows each plant enough room to grow and receive adequate sunlight.

Sun Preference: Sunflowers are known for their preference for full sun. They thrive in locations that receive at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day.

Days to Maturity: The days to maturity for sunflowers can vary based on the variety planted. On average, most sunflowers will mature and be ready for harvest within 80 to 120 days after planting.

Appearance: Sunflowers have large, bright yellow petals (ray florets) surrounding a central disk that can be brown, yellow, or maroon. The central disk is composed of numerous small flowers (disk florets) that mature into seeds. Our sunflowers are a black variety called Claret with dark moody petals and dark centre, as well as plum. We have cross pollinated the two varieties to see what comes of that

Harvesting :  Harvest as the first petals start to lift off the centre disk. Strip three-quarters of the leaves off the stem

Vase life : Vase life can be expected from 7-10 days.

Special Features:  Sunflowers exhibit a behaviour called heliotropism, where the flower buds and young blossoms track the movement of the sun throughout the day. They face east in the morning and follow the sun as it moves across the sky.  Sunflowers have even travelled to space! In 2012, U.S. astronaut Don Pettit brought sunflower seeds to the International Space Station and documented their growth in space. Sunflowers are used in phytoremediation to extract toxins from the soil, such as heavy metals and radioactive contaminants. sunflowers symbolize adoration, loyalty, and longevity. They are often associated with positivity and happiness due to their bright, sunny appearance.

Design features: I do not design with sunflowers at all, because of their large droopy heads. I will simply add them in bouquets.
