Silver Dollar

Scientific Name: Lunaria

Height: The Silver Dollar plant typically grows to a height of around 90cm or 36 inches. It is important to provide adequate space for the plant to reach its full height without being crowded by other plants.

Days to Maturity: Second year followering

Sun Preference: Silver Dollar plants thrive in full sun to partial shade conditions.

Plant Type: As mentioned earlier, the Silver Dollar plant is a biennial plant. This means that it completes its life cycle in two years – germinating and growing in the first year, flowering and producing seeds in the second year, and then dying off.

Pinching: To encourage bushier growth and prevent the Silver Dollar plant from becoming leggy, it is recommended to pinch the tallest stem. This practice helps promote lateral growth and creates a more compact and attractive plant.

Appearance : These seed pods, which start out green and later turn translucent and off-white in color, are often referred to as “silver dollars” due to their flat, oblong shape and sheen.

Harvesting:  Wait until the seed pods have turned brown and papery on the plant. This usually occurs in late summer or early autumn. Rub the pods between your fingers to loosen the seeds and expose the silky beautiful seedpod.

Vaselife: These seedpods can add a unique and long-lasting element to bouquets and vases, making them a popular choice for decorative purposes.

Special Features:. In addition to its ornamental value, lunaria has cultural significance. In folklore, it is often associated with honesty and sincerity, likely due to its transparent seed pods. Historically, the seed pods were sometimes used as a symbol of wealth or good fortune, given their coin-like appearance.

Drying Options: Cut once seedpods have lost their color. Hang upside down to dry.

Design features: The dried seed pods of the silver dollar plant are popular for decorative purposes. They can be used in dried floral arrangements, wreaths, or simply displayed on their own for their unique appearance and shimmering quality.
