Description
Please note: Orders will be shipped from the end of March
Flamboyant coral-to-tangerine blooms with rippled, silk-thin petals and a glowing golden eye. From the Italian Colibrì series —large flowers on long, dancing stems for vivid spring colour in beds and bouquets. Height: 45–60 cm. Bloom: 6–9 cm.
Harvest
Stage: Pick when buds are showing colour and just cracking.
Cut in the cool of morning. To extend vase life, seal stems: dip
the cut ends in boiling water for 7–10 sec or quickly pass
through a flame, then hydrate in deep, clean, cool water.
Vase life: Typically 5–7 days (longer in a cool room).
R85 per seed packet
Sow late autumn–mid winter for earliest spring colour or late
winter–very early spring in cooler climates; or start indoors 10–
12 weeks before last frost.
Seeds need light to germinate. Sow on the surface of fine, moist
mix; do not cover (a dusting of vermiculite is ok).
Best germination at 12–18 °C; expect 10–20 days. Keep evenly
moist, never soggy.
Grow on cool and bright. Minimise root disturbance—
transplant as small plugs once true leaves form.
Plant 20–25 cm apart in full sun; rich, well-drained soil with
added compost.
Cool-loving—plant early and avoid heat. Mulch lightly, water
deeply but infrequently. Deadhead to encourage waves of
bloom.
