Globe-thistle

Scientific Name: Echinops(Greek words ‘echinos’ (hedgehog) and ‘ops’ (appearance), referring to its spiny flower heads.)

 

Height: Globe thistle typically grows to a height of 90-120cm (3-4 ft). When planting globe thistle, ensure you provide enough space for the plant to reach its full height without overcrowding.

Days to Maturity: Globe thistle has a long maturity period, taking approximately 365 days to reach full maturity. It is essential to be patient and provide proper care throughout the growing season.

Sun Preference: Globe thistle thrives in full sun to partial shade conditions. When selecting a planting location, choose an area that receives at least 6-8 hours of sunlight per day. However, the plant can also tolerate some shade, especially in hot climates.

Plant Type: As mentioned, globe thistle is a perennial plant, meaning it will return year after year with proper care. Perennials like globe thistle add beauty and structure to gardens and landscapes.

Appearance :  Echinops ritro, is characterized by its unique and captivating appearance. The flower head of the globe thistle consists of numerous small, blue flowers that form a round globe-like structure. These flowers are particularly attractive to bees and butterflies, making the plant a beneficial addition to pollinator gardens.

Harvesting:  Harvest when majority of the globe has turned blue but before the flower petals begin to form. Foliage will yellow prematurely so remove at harvest.

Vase Life : Vase life can be expected for 7 - 10 days fresh

Drying Options: Hang upside down in a dark and warm area.

Special Features: Globe thistle serves as an important nectar source for pollinators like butterflies and bees, contributing to the overall health of the ecosystem.  Globe thistle is known for its ability to thrive in dry conditions, making it an excellent choice for water-wise gardening and xeriscaping.

Design features: This is an amazing dry flower and will last very long when looked after. With is textural blue spheres it is such a great focal in an arrangement when used fresh.
