Globe Amaranth

Scientific Name: Gomphrena globosa

Height: Globe amaranthus typically grows to a height of 61-76cm (24-30 inches). It is important to consider the height of the plant when selecting a location for planting to ensure it has enough space to grow and thrive.

Days to Maturity: Globe amaranthus has a relatively long maturity period, taking approximately 85-100 days from planting to reach full maturity. This timeline should be considered when planning your garden or landscaping project.

Sun Preference: Globe amaranthus thrives in full sun conditions. When planting this colorful annual, make sure to choose a location that receives ample sunlight throughout the day to promote healthy growth and abundant flowering.

Plant Type: As mentioned earlier, globe amaranthus is classified as an annual plant.

Appearance : Globe amaranth is a bushy, upright plant with oblong or lance-shaped leaves arranged oppositely on the stem. The young leaves are woolly-white and turn green with sparsely white hairs when matured. The flowers are small and rounded, coming in bright colours such as pink, purple, white, orange, and red. Each flower head consists of many tiny florets that give the appearance of a single, round bloom.

Harvesting : Harvest when the flowers have coloured up and stems are firm. To dry flowers let them open completely and hang upside down in a warm, dark place for a few weeks.

Vaselife: Vase life can be expected up to 14 days or more

Special Features : In traditional medicine, globe amaranth has been used to treat a variety of ailments. In Ayurveda, it is believed to have benefits for respiratory issues, and in some cultures, it's used as a diuretic and to reduce fever. In the language of flowers, globe amaranth symbolizes unfading love and immortality, likely due to its long-lasting blooms. While not widely consumed, the leaves and flowers of globe amaranth are edible and can be used in salads or as a garnish. In some cultures, the flowers are brewed into a tea.
