Queen Anne’s Lace

Scientific Name: Ammi majus

Height: Queen Anne’s Lace plants typically grow to a height ranging from 122-180cm (48-65 inches). This makes them relatively tall plants that can add vertical interest to gardens or landscapes.

Days to Maturity: The maturity period for Queen Anne’s Lace is approximately 90-110 days. This means that from the time of planting, it takes around 3 to 4 months for the plant to reach full maturity and produce flowers.

Sun Preference: Queen Anne’s Lace thrives in full sun conditions. It requires at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day to grow and bloom successfully. Planting it in a location with ample sunlight will promote healthy growth and abundant flowering.

Plant Type: Ammi is classified as a hardy annual plant. Hardy annuals are plants that complete their life cycle within a year, germinating, flowering, setting seed, and dying in one growing season. They are generally resilient and can tolerate various growing conditions.

Appearance   Ammi flowers, commonly known as Bishop's weed or Queen Anne's lace, belong to the Apiaceae family. They are characterized by their delicate, umbrella-like clusters of small, white or cream-colored flowers. These clusters, called umbels, are composed of many tiny, five-petaled flowers that form a lacy, intricate pattern.. Ammi flowers are often used in floral arrangements and gardens for their airy, elegant appearance and their ability to attract beneficial insects like bees and butterflies.

Harvesting   pick when 80% of the flowers on the stem are open.

Vase life : Queen Anne’s Lace has a vase life of 6 – 8 days

Special features : : Ammi visnaga has been used in traditional medicine for centuries to treat various ailments, including kidney stones and asthma, thanks to its muscle-relaxing properties. Ancient Egyptians utilized Ammi visnaga to treat skin conditions and as a remedy for kidney problems. Ammi flowers are known to attract beneficial insects such as hoverflies, ladybugs, and parasitic wasps, which help control garden pests. In the language of flowers, Ammi flowers are often associated with protection and sanctuary.

Design features: their soft and airy structure make them amazing in all designing. They are large so can be a structural base layer, or a filler and even a supporting flower. I love that they can be used in installations, meadow arrangements and tablescapes.
