Geum

Scientific Name : also known as avens, is a genus of flowering plants that belong to the Rosaceae family.

Plant Height: The height of geum plants can vary depending on the species and cultivar. On average, most geum plants grow to a height of around 30-60 cm (12-24 inches).

Plant Spacing: A general guideline for spacing geum plants is about 30-45 cm (12-18 inches) apart. This spacing ensures that each plant has enough room to grow without competing with neighboring plants for nutrients and sunlight.

Days to Maturity: Geum plants typically take about 60-90 days to reach maturity

Sun Preference: Geum plants prefer full sun to partial shade conditions for optimal growth. They thrive in locations that receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. In hotter climates, providing some afternoon shade can help protect the plants from excessive heat stress. Adequate sunlight is essential for geum plants to produce healthy foliage and vibrant flowers.

Plant Type: Geum plants are herbaceous perennials.

Appearance : Geums, also known as avens, are plants that typically start as basal rosettes of foliage in the spring, resembling weeds initially. As they grow, they develop long wiry stems that rise from within the foliage and produce brilliant, ruffled flowers on long stems. The flowers are small, usually around an inch or smaller, with a form similar to an open miniature ranunculus. These flowers are displayed as little buttons at the end of the stem and have an elegant and neat appearance. Geum plants produce showy, five-petaled flowers that can be single or double and come in colours such as yellow, orange, red, and white. The flowers often have prominent stamens and a central cluster of pistils.

Harvesting : Wait until the Geum flowers are fully open and at their peak before harvesting. This ensures that you get the best-looking blooms with vibrant colours.

Vase life : Geum flowers have a vase life of 5-7 days in fresh water with no preservative.

Special Feature : In herbal medicine and folklore, Geum species have been used for their medicinal properties. Some indigenous cultures used Geum roots to make herbal teas and remedies. Geum plants can be propagated from seeds, divisions, or root cuttings. Seeds should be sown in spring or fall, while divisions or cuttings can be done in early spring or fall.

Design features: These beautiful smaller flowers I love to use as a supporting flower or floating flower.
