Scientific Name: Pelargonium species
Height: Geraniums come in various sizes, ranging from low-growing mat forming types to tall varieties that can reach up to 0.9 meters (3 feet) in height. When planning your geranium garden, consider the mature height of the specific variety you intend to grow and space them accordingly. Taller varieties may require staking or support for proper growth.
Plant Spacing: Proper plant spacing is essential for healthy geranium growth. Generally, a spacing of 30 cm (12 inches) between plants is recommended for most varieties. However, this may vary depending on the specific geranium type and growing conditions. Overcrowding can lead to reduced growth and increased susceptibility to pests and diseases.
Sun Preference: Geraniums thrive in full sun but can also tolerate partial shade. Provide at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day for best results. In hot climates, afternoon shade can help protect the plants from excessive heat.
Days to Maturity: Days to maturity refers to the time it takes for a geranium plant to bloom after being planted. This varies depending on the specific variety and growing conditions. Some geraniums may take as little as 45 days to bloom, while others may take up to 120 days or more. Understanding the days to maturity of your chosen geranium variety will help you plan your garden accordingly and enjoy blooms throughout the season.
Plant Type: Geraniums come in two main types: zonal (Pelargonium x hortorum) and ivy-leaved (Pelargonium peltatum). Zonal geraniums have large, flat leaves with distinct margins and produce abundant flowers in various colours. Ivy-leaved geraniums have more delicate foliage resembling ivy and tend to trail over edges or hang down from containers. Both types are widely used in gardening and container plantings due to their attractive appearance and ease of care.
Appearance : The flowers of geraniums are typically five-petaled and can be white, pink, purple, or blue. The leaves of geranium plants are palmately divided into narrow, pointed segments. The fruit capsule of a geranium consists of five cells joined to a column produced from the centre of the flower. When the fruit is ripe, the beak-like stigma springs open and disperses the seeds.
Harvesting ; Harvest when plants have matured and stems have hardened. Cut in the cooler part of the day from the lower part of the stem.
Vase life : Vase life is 5-7days
Special Feature: : Scented geraniums are native to South Africa and have been cultivated for centuries for their fragrant leaves. They come in a wide range of scents, including rose, lemon, mint, apple, nutmeg, and even chocolate. Some geranium species have been traditionally used for their healing properties, especially in treating respiratory illnesses and promoting relaxation Scented geraniums can help repel insects like mosquitoes and wasps due to their essential oils.
Design features: I use these lovely scented leaves for bouquets. They are also great in large scale design and installations.
